Projects that set themselves up around what the work is for

Ambital's projects start with one question: what is this work for? Pick a retainer, a build, a campaign, an audit or another purpose, and Ambital suggests the billing model, the tabs and the starting phases. Tasks, milestones, a Gantt chart, the RAID log, time and margin live on the same project.

What the wizard sets up

A project shaped for the work

  • A purpose: delivery, retainer, build, campaign, social, paid ads, design, audit, packaged service and more
  • A billing model: retainer, fixed price or time and materials
  • How the client signs off: in the portal or by emailed link
  • Suggested phases to rename, reorder or remove
  • The tabs that kind of work needs, already switched on

What every project has

The same spine, whatever the work

  • Overview, Financials, Tasks and Time
  • A hub for the project's emails, meetings, notes, files and documents
  • Phases, milestones, a Gantt chart and a schedule, on by default
  • A RAID log and a decisions log when you want them
  • Margin worked out from real time, costs and invoices

How it works

A new project in four steps

  1. Step 1: Say what it's for

Choose a client project or a non-billable one, then pick its purpose. If none fits, choose Something else.

  2. Step 2: Check the phases

Rename, reorder or remove the suggested phases, add your own, or skip them and start with none.

  3. Step 3: Fill in the overview

Name, client, dates and budget. The tab list is already ticked for that kind of work; change anything you like.

  4. Step 4: Run the work

Plan tasks under phases and sections, log time against them and watch budget and margin update as you go.

Inside projects

Everything a project needs, in one place

Ambital projects list: nine active projects as cards, each with its client, retainer or fixed-price tag, task count, dates and team

Every project at a glance

The projects list shows each project's billing model, dates, task count and team, filtered by active, on hold, completed or archived.

Phases, sections and tasks

Up to three levels, with To do, In progress, Done and Ongoing statuses. Everything drags, and the order you set is the order clients see.

Milestones and Gantt

The Gantt is drawn from the dates on your phases and tasks, so there is nothing separate to keep up. Export it as a PDF, and tasks as a CSV.

RAID log and decisions

Each risk has an owner, a red, amber or green rating, impact, likelihood and a mitigation plan, which Ambi can draft. Decisions are recorded as they are made.

Financials and margin

Budget, rates, invoices and the invoice schedule, with margin worked out from logged time at cost, expenses and supplier bills.

Project templates

Save a project's shape, with its phases, tasks, milestones and invoice schedule, and start the next one from it. From Business.

Questions about projects

Before you start a project

Is there a limit on projects?
Free covers 2 active projects and 3 clients. Pro and every plan above it have unlimited projects and clients.
Which billing models can a project use?
Every plan supports retainer, fixed price and time and materials. You can also create non-billable projects for your own work or for pro-bono client work.
Can I change the tabs after the project is set up?
Yes. A project's settings let you change its purpose, how the client signs off and which tabs are on. Changing the purpose never rewrites your tabs unless you ask it to.
Is there a Gantt chart?
Yes, on every plan. It is drawn from the dates on your phases and tasks, and exports as a PDF.
Can I reuse a project's structure?
Yes, from Business (£59 a month). Save any project as a template and start new ones from it, with task and milestone dates worked out from the new start date.
