Timesheets that turn your hours into billing and margin

Ambital's timesheets let you log hours by the day or week against client work, your own business, a deal you are chasing or personal tasks. Each hour lands on its project, burning a retainer's allowance, counting against a fixed fee or becoming billable time, so budgets and margin stay current.

Included on every plan, including FreeMore in Time
Ambital timesheets for the week of 28 September: 11.5 billable hours worth £1,257, tracked against logged time for each day, and a week grid of hours by project

Where time can go

Four kinds of work, one dialog

  • Client: work on client projects, including pro bono
  • Business: your internal projects and running the business
  • New business: time spent on deals in the pipeline
  • Personal: tasks from your Personal workspace, from Pro
  • Time off: leave and bank holidays, kept out of your work hours

What the hours do

Time turns into money

  • Retainer: hours burn the period's allowance
  • Fixed price: hours count against the fee, so margin is real
  • Time and materials: hours become billable amounts to invoice
  • Internal: hours count as the cost of running your business
  • Every hour feeds your reports and each project's budget

How it works

Logged in four steps

  1. Step 1: Log time

Open Log time, choose client, business, new business or personal, pick the project or task and enter the hours. Add a note for the invoice.

  2. Step 2: Or log as you work

Log time from a task's detail panel while you work on it, or fill the gaps from My schedule.

  3. Step 3: Check the week

The week view shows each day's hours by project, billable and non-billable, with tracked time beside it if you use the activity tracker.

  4. Step 4: Watch the numbers move

Retainer balances, fixed-fee margin and uninvoiced time update as soon as the hours are saved.

Questions about timesheets

Before you log an hour

Can Ambital track my time automatically?
Yes, from Business (£59 a month). The desktop activity tracker records what was on your screen for you to turn into logged time, and the Early integration syncs time tracked in the Early app twice a day.
Do I need to log time on a fixed-price project?
It is worth doing. Hours on a fixed-price project count against the fee, so the Financials tab shows the margin you are really making rather than the one you hoped for.
Can I export my timesheets?
Yes. Export CSV on the Timesheets page downloads your logged time, on every plan.
Does time off count as work?
No. Time off completes the day on your timesheet but is kept out of actual hours, reports and utilisation.
Can an admin approve timesheets?
Yes, on Teams (£150 a month). Each person submits their week, an admin approves it, and approved entries lock for everyone except admins.
Can clients see my timesheets?
No. If you switch on a retainer statement in the client portal, the client sees hours used and remaining, without rates or costs.
