The activity tracker

Let your computer remember what you worked on, then turn it into logged time.

Business plan and above

The activity tracker is Ambital's answer to "what did I actually do on Tuesday?". A small desktop app records which applications and windows were active on your machine; Ambital turns that into a reviewable timeline you can drag onto tasks to log real time — no more end-of-week archaeology.

Setting it up

  1. Go to Settings → Desktop Tracker and generate an access token. The token acts as you, so treat it like a password — if you ever lose track of it, revoke it and create a new one.
  2. Install the Ambital desktop tracker on your machine and paste the token in once.
  3. That's it — activity starts flowing while the tracker is running.

The Activity page

It all lives on Timesheets (Activity and Timesheets were one job done in two places, so they're now one screen): the week view opens with each day's tracked time next to the hours you actually logged — with what you logged listed right under each day, project by project — and below the review, a breakdown of where the week's time went by app, window and project. It's a mirror, not a timesheet: nothing here bills anything until you log it. Sample data from the signup demo never appears here — only your own logged time counts.

The review's Logged column shows everything logged to the day, however it was logged. Entries made on the Timesheets page (which have no time of day) stack from the top of the working day with a dashed edge — drag one to give it a real slot.

Turning activity into logged time

The Timesheets page has a day timeline that lays your tracked activity alongside your meetings. From there:

  • Drag a task onto the timeline to log a 30-minute block where you dropped it — stretch or move it to match reality.
  • Drag a recorded activity block onto a task to log its tracked time directly.

Ten minutes reviewing the timeline at the end of the day usually recovers time you'd otherwise never have billed.

Privacy and control

The tracker records app and window titles from your own machine, for your own eyes — clients and team members never see it.

  • Hide anything: on the Activity page, hide any app or window-title keyword (your bank, your personal email) — hidden items drop out of the breakdown.
  • Manage the hidden list any time under Settings → Desktop Tracker.
  • Stop the desktop app and nothing is recorded, full stop.

Note: the separate Early integration also feeds timesheets — it syncs time you've tracked in the Early app, twice a day automatically. Use whichever fits how you work; see the Integrations overview.

Where this fits

Part of how Ambital runs interim and embedded roles. Each page shows how the project is set up, what it looks like, and the integrations that fit.
